An Internet Blackout
It is looking increasingly likely that one of the elements that will occur when Cataclysm X hits is that the internet goes dark.
We’re now starting to get glimpses into how this process might begin:
Houthis may sabotage western internet cables in Red Sea, Yemen telecoms firms warn
UN-recognised government and telecoms firms speak of threat to digital infrastructure, with some cables lying 100m below surface
[…]
Telecom firms linked to the UN-recognised Yemen government have said they fear Houthi rebels are planning to sabotage a network of submarine cables in the Red Sea critical to the functioning of the western internet and the transmission of financial data.
The warning came after a Houthi-linked Telegram channel published a map of the cables running along the bed of the Red Sea. The image was accompanied by a message: “There are maps of international cables connecting all regions of the world through the sea. It seems that Yemen is in a strategic location, as internet lines that connect entire continents – not only countries – pass near it.”
Yemen Telecom said it had made both diplomatic and legal efforts during the past few years to persuade global international telecom alliances not to have any dealings with the Houthis since it would provide a terrorist group with knowledge of how the submarine cables operated. It has been estimated that the Red Sea carries about 17% of the world’s internet traffic along fibre pipes.
Here is a decent visual on the internet pipelines in that region:
The Houthis have the capabilities to conduct an attack like this now, courtesy mostly to Iran. But I would not be surprised if the U.S. and allies are hoping for something like this to occur—And if the Houthis don’t do it, they may even false flag it themselves.
An attack like this provides a perfect justification for escalation on any level. It’s pretty much a free check written to the U.S. to do what they will in the Middle East.
Additionally, depending on the severity of the lost internet, this event could be used for martial law (we rely so much on the internet now, it would be catastrophic to lose it on a societal level) or even for delaying elections (half the states won’t even be able to vote since they use electronic methods now). There are plenty of other possibilities. These are just the first two glaring ones that come to mind.
What better way to break off any resistance factors across the world than to remove our only source of connection, as well? Every dissident that did not prepare locally would be completely isolated if we lose the internet. Just another reason you should be building an enclave right now.
Of course, it is helpful to remember that these pipelines are built with contagion in mind. One line going down won’t wreck us all. One, or even many, pipelines going down will not fully stop the internet. It will just put more pressure on other pipelines, potentially slowing down the network. As they are built now, if one goes down, they just reroute traffic to others. But that can only hold for so long.
Still, should the network be slowed in any meaningful sense, you know the state will “route” further network usage as needed. They aren’t going to let you use the internet at the same speeds as hospitals, their military, or emergency services. If a little goes down, it will be a lot for the regular person. We will be capped, and the “internet rationing” will begin to be normalized.
But even that safeguard relies on only the Houthis striking internet lines, which is no guarantee. If the demons at the top get their war with Russia/China/Iran, we all know those internet lines will drop worldwide. Not even everyone’s beloved ‘Musk Satellites’ would be safe in that scenario. They’ll just get shot down.
So, there may be a time coming when you cannot send an email, look up how to do something on YouTube, or even read my apocalyptic ramblings.
